Why would you want to be like someone else when you get to be you?

You are unique, a one-of-a-kind blazing light upon this world. Yes it’s a world in which many have had their unique special light dim because they have been made to believe that they weren’t special, weren’t loved, weren’t understood, weren’t given a fair chance… And by conforming, fighting the wrong fight, they have become lost amongst the darkness. What they believed they were fighting for and thought they had achieved has only proven to be the exact opposite, further fuelling the initiative to bring more barriers and hate.

Don’t give into peer pressure. There is nothing cool about being like that influencer, having thousands of followers, having those superficial fancy shiny things that they flaunt. For a society that likes to fight against “labels” they sure do like their flashy brands and the status it brings, don’t they? Hypocrites the lot of them.

You can be inspired by others, yes, and their journeys, but to be the best version of yourself and to be able to help others to be the best versions of themselves. If you can afford the nice shiny things then by all means, nothing wrong looking pretty, you can be fly as long as you don’t cry. By that I mean there is nothing wrong to want certain things, they are tools to help us, enhance our appearance but when the obsession of wanting costs you your sanity, your health, puts you into debt, or worse, costs you your life, then that is not okay. It is a very serious problem. Any watch can tell time regardless of the name attached to it, do you get what I’m saying? Material possessions are tools, mere instruments to help you in your day-to-day life but they don’t define you nor give you any true worth.

I don’t know about you but the legacy I want to leave on this world is not what type of car I drove, how big the house I lived in was, or how much money I had in the bank. It’s what impact I had on the people around me, my family, friends, and all of you. Hopefully it’s a positive one and that is what I strive towards as best as possible. Even something small as giving a smile to someone could be the most cherished and priceless gift someone has ever given them. That is something my late mother taught me, she would say it often and I hold onto that.

You don’t need the world’s validation to be successful, to be heard, loved or whatever the case may be… Just remember to be yourself. Keep striving to be that best version of yourself. Give more and take less. Let the beauty of your unique amazing light shine. Just as every flower is beautiful in its own way and has purpose in every season, in its own time, so do you. You are loved by the One that created you. God is love, and let love be your guide, always. You are God’s masterpiece.

There is an incredible extract from ‘A Return to Love’ by Marianne Williamson that I want to end this blog post with. Some of you may have heard a paraphrased version that was used in the film Coach Carter with Samuel L. Jackson and Channing Tatum, but truthfully the film lost the plot by removing the most important element, anyway the original quote goes as follows Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, ‘Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?’ Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

What she said.
